Mission

Groundwork Somerville strives to bring about the sustained regeneration, improvement, and management of the physical environment through the development of community-based partnerships which empower people, businesses, and organizations to promote environmental, economic, and social well-being.

About the Surrounding Community

The youth poverty percentage in Somerville is 26%, more than double the statewide average, and 64% of youth enrolled in Somerville Public Schools are eligible for free or reduced price lunch. 96% of households earn $45,000 or less a year, and 64% earn less than $20,000 a year which places a family of 3 (the majority of households) below the poverty line. These locations also have the most difficult access to grocery stores and affordable food because of cross multi-lane highways, long bus routes, and expensive taxi rides to get to a grocery store or farmers market.

Project Overview

The DOI/VISTA Devin Powers is helping address the issues of youth poverty/unemployment and food insecurity. Devin is working to create outreach and recruitment materials and job opportunities for the youth jobs program, The Green Team, which operates an urban farm and mobile farmers market in Somerville. He also helps increase awareness throughout the community regarding Groundwork’s services, such as the affordable produce available at the mobile market, in order to bring more food to low-income families.
